Cabarrus County is one of the fastest-growing parts of our service area, and its water systems reflect that. Instead of relying on a single source, Concord and Kannapolis pull from several lakes and trade water with neighboring cities, so what comes out of your tap can change depending on demand.

Where Cabarrus County’s Water Comes From

• Concord: two treatment plants. The Coddle Creek plant draws from Lake Don T. Howell, and the Hillgrove plant draws from Lake Fisher and Lake Howell. Concord also buys water from Albemarle, which comes from the Yadkin River.
• Kannapolis: Kannapolis Lake is the main source, with Lake Don T. Howell and Second Creek available as backups. The city is also connected to Concord and Salisbury to share water when needed.
• Private wells: common in the eastern part of the county around Mount Pleasant and Midland.

• Taste that changes from time to time. When a system blends water from different lakes and neighboring cities, taste and smell can shift with the mix.

Why does my Concord water taste different some weeks?

Concord can draw from more than one lake and also buys water from Albemarle, so the mix changes with demand and season. It’s all treated to the same standards, but the taste can vary. A whole-house carbon system smooths that out.
